ANTHONY O’CONNOR

Director, Cathedrals and Strategy

Anthony leads on strategy and engaging with new Cathedrals who show an interest in adopting the Volition programme. This involves working with the Deans of Cathedrals, Chapters and their teams to ensure they understand the commitment and benefits of supporting unemployed people through volunteering. He also identifies funding opportunities and develops strategic partnerships with key organisations.

Anthony is the Director of Development and Fundraising and Manchester Cathedral a role he has held since 2008. He has been instrumental in bringing a new approach to income generation for the Cathedral, including concerts attracting world-wide audiences, with MTV and BBC2, such as concerts by Elbow and Alysha Keys as part of MTV Crashes Manchester.

Anthony began his career in the Civil Service in London and played an active role in the National Executive Committee of the largest Civil Service Trade Union, including the General Council for Civil Service Unions. After relocating to work for the DWP in Manchester in the mid 90’s, he was offered a secondment to Sheffield Cathedral and went on to lead a £6.5 million Development Project. Since 2008, he has continued to introduce and lead major capital investments, this time at Manchester Cathedral. He has also introduced innovative and high profile events
