Beekeeping newsletter 14th May 2020

Jenni’s Journey

I arrived in the UK in 2020 at the start of the pandemic.  English was my second language and the country had begun to close down with social isolation being the norm.  I applied for lots of jobs and often got an interview but couldn’t get the actual position.  I was encouraged to try Volition by a friend.  I started volunteering with them as a classroom assistant and got lots of practical help of how to go about job search the UK way!  I volunteered for just over one year.  During this time I learnt to understand the “locals” and how to fit into British culture.  I became far more confident along the way and learnt how to put myself forward

When Volition had a vacancy for a trainee beekeeper they suggested I apply.  I used the skills I had learnt and was delighted when I got the job.  I had never thought of being a beekeeper and now I had this amazing opportunity.

Over the last 18 months I have learnt a great deal about bees but also a huge amount about the people we are helping. I love going to jobcentres and telling claimants about the scheme and how it can benefit them.

This summer I gained a credit pass in my British Bee Keeping Association exam, which means I am now a qualified beekeeper. My children thought it was funny at first that we were all doing our homework together but now take pride in being able to say their mum knows all about bees and they are never scared.  I continue to enjoy helping others achieve their potential and thank Volition for believing and encouraging me.
